Filipino experts discusses empowering communities

KAHULUI, Maui- Two Filipino leaders shared their experiences last Tuesday evening [July 28, 2014] of organizing and empowering communities to take control of their health, workplace and food systems, according to an announcement.


Dr. Romeo Quijano and Gilbert Sape give the presentation at 6 p.m. at Maui Waena Intermediate School.


Quijano is a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of the Philippines' College of Medicine in Manila. He's project leader of bioassay and toxicologic studies on medicianl plants for the National Intergrated Research Program on Medicinal Plants and he's a member of the National Research Council of the Philippines and the steering council of Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific. He's president of the Health Action for Human Rights in the Philippines, among other positions.


Sape has been working on right to food and productive resources, ecological agriculture and climate jsutice over last 15 years. Most recently he has been involved in building capacity of communities in Asia to resist land grabbing, and he's been doing policy advocacy at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. He's a consultant for Sustainable Development Foundation and a consultant for the Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific.
