SECOND PHOTO: Christine Sabado places a sign outside Sabado Galleries while opening the Market Street business Wednesday morning in Wailuku. Sabado said she and artist husband Phil Sabado have been working in Wailuku for 35 years, but their move to the former Brown-Kobayashi storefront near Iao Theater has taken the gallery to a new level. She said she is excited both by Wailuku’s future and its touch with its past. “I congratulate people when they come to Wailuku,” she said. “I say, ‘congratulations, you are now in our local marketplace.’ Paia and Makawao are also walking towns, but Wailuku is different.” She said her daughter, Jackie Sabado, also has a shop on Market Street. Paradise Now features Jackie Sabado’s handmade fabrics and prints. “I’m excited for Wailuku,” Christine Sabado said.
